The city speaks

Cities have brought together some of the world’s greatest thinkers and provided fertile ground for progressive thought, becoming the stage for some of the world’s biggest political, economic and social events. The city is also a place of conflict and challenge, where differences become stark in their proximity. Yet these diverse influences have also resulted in the sharing of knowledge, the exploration of new ideas, and brilliant innovation and creativity. The imprints of such inspiration – captured through art and creative expression in many forms including architecture, film, music, literature and theatre – are left by a variety of times, cultures, geographical areas and faiths.
The exhibition explores how individuals and communities have been inspired by cities and how they, in turn, used different forms of creative expression to change the spaces they have lived in. The majority of the project is focused primarily on European cities, yet there are plenty of examples and lessons to be learnt from cities across the world.
The City Speaks is divided into four sections, culminating in an interactive epilogue where visitors are asked to contribute their views and ideas on individual sections. This gives the visitors an opportunity to create their own manifesto of their city – a chance to imagine how a city could be changed and shaped for the better.
This exhibition is a partnership between the British Council and Maslaha, as part of the British Council’s Our Shared Europe programme.
