"The Maribor football fan club Viole was getting ready for a football match when members of the competing fan club from Ljubljana showed up and started demolishing Maribor. Fans of both fan clubs got into a fight, and the police had to intervene to restrain the opponents. Only the first Viola, their guide, escaped and made his way to the football stadium, where he is seen in a large shot with a burning stadium in the background and a big sign in his hands reading: WE ARE MARIBOR.” A story like this could have very well been a real one, but this particular one is made up and narrated in a widely popular manner of storytelling – in the form of a comic. Writer, translator, journalist and script writer Zdravko Duša has joined forces with academic painter and illustrator Damijan Stepančič to create a story entitled «Violent«, which will pursue the Maribor story all the way from Koroška street, across Tkalski prehod towards a grand finale in the street Ob jarku. The city comic is the result of a goal set by the ECoC program TownKeys, which is to clean the town center of empty business premises. The city center seems to be increasingly losing its content as more and more buildings end up deserted, falling apart and disappearing. In order to bring public attention to this problem, which other cities also seem to share, we will place a street comic in broken windows and on decomposing façades, which will cover up the town blots and in a special way uncover them again.
