Since the beginning of July, around 5000 books have been available at the Ciproš Bookshop which under the auspices of the ECC moved to the new premises on the ground floor of the Grand Café exhibition grounds on Main Square.
The Ciproš Bookshop as an accompanying programme with a few of its books moved to the left bank of the Drava River already during Mariber, the Maribor regional book fair (19 – 24 June). With the discarded books, the designer Borut Wenzel created an ambient organisation of the fair (books as bricks, art chandeliers by Polona Poklukar), and the wall was decorated with the photo wallpaper by Matjaž Wenzel featuring the Ciproš Bookshop in the Pekarna complex.
The Ciproš Maribor Book Lovers Club was founded in 1995. It was named after a poem by Janko Glazer, a poet from Ruše. Ciproš symbolises renaissance, and just like “ciproš” (Rosebay Willowherb) blooms on the grasslands of the Pohorje Hills, old and discarded books are brought to life on the shelves of their bookshop and in the hands of their readers. In Slovenia, tons of books are ground in mills. In order to save at least a part of these books and restore their dignity, they have asked schools and libraries to give them the discarded books. With the help of voluntary club members, they have renovated the former barracks in the Pekarna complex where the bookshop is still located. The required material is given to schools, kindergartens and other institutions (safe house, retirement homes, various cultural projects, etc.) for free.
In 17 years, they have gathered around half a million of various material: books, periodicals, maps, etc. A walk around the Ciproš Bookshop is also a unique historical overview of Slovene publishing with separately displayed collections of individual publishers.
The Ciproš Bookshop at the Grand Café will be open every day between 9.00 am and 9.00 pm. Beside selling books, they will also organise various literary events at a symbolic price.
