In his one-act comic opera The Duped Qadi, the famous classical opera composer and reformer Christoph Willibald Gluck tells, in a humorous way, a story set in the Ottoman Empire of his time.
The story, which could just as well be set in any other place and time, is about an Islamic judge (qadi) who tires to get a divorce from his wife to be able to marry another woman, while this other women is in love with another man. The judge realizes that despite his wealth, power and position there are certain things in life that are beyond his control. His bitter experience shows him that no matter how superior he may be he is just an ordinary man.
