From March 15th to June 15th, 2012, the Grand Café in Maribor hosted the immensely successful exhibition Germans and Maribor: 1846 – 1946: a Century of Change, which marked the transformation of the formerly unused behemoth in the centre of Maribor into a new showroom. A few months after the exhibition closed, Primož Premzl Art Cabinet, in collaboration with Institute Maribor 2012 – European Capital of Culture and the Maribor Regional Archive, published a comprehensive catalogue of the exhibition.
The 240-page catalogue, published in Slovene and German, consists of all exhibited descriptions as well as an overview of the photographs featured in the exhibition.
The catalogue contains messages identical to the ones presented in the exhibition. The Introduction touches upon the basic premises concerning national identity and symbolism, whereas the subsequent Arc of History offers a detailed presentation of the town’s political and public identity during a century of change. The central focus of the catalogue is, as was the case with the exhibition, dedicated to a Detailed Approach, a chapter focusing on individual phenomena, personalities, buildings, events, creativity and the everyday lives of the people of Maribor in a century which gave birth to modern national identity and saw the rise of creativity and national contrast within politics and public life. Both the catalogue and the exhibition place the aforementioned events and the pulse of Maribor within this inevitable historical context.
The catalogue, published with the help of numerous authors, is a long-awaited and necessary upgrade of the successful exhibition Germans and Maribor.
