The entire village of Vipavski Križ is under monument protection. The village is enclosed with city walls and was originally a fortress. At the end of the 15th century the Counts of Gorizia had a four-towered castle built and in 1482 they had the settlement walled. The city walls were built to protect the settlement from the Turkish raids. In 1507 the settlement was granted market rights and in 1532 the Roman Emperor Ferdinand I. declared it a town.

The tour of the Vipavski Križ begins just outside the city walls. Take a walk along the narrow streets and alleys past several homes of the famous villagers. Take a good look of the four-towered Attems Castle which boasts a magnificent wine cellar and enter the Church of St Francis of Assisi that boasts the Glory of the Holy Trinity, the biggest and most splendid Baroque painting in Slovenia. Upon previous notice you can also visit the Capuchin Monastery and its enormous antique library. Accompanied by the abbot you will have the opportunity to see where the renowned preacher Janez Svetokriški lived and worked for many years.

Tour duration: 60 minutes
