The opera Nabucco, one of Verdi's most successful works, is based on a biblical story about Nebuchadnezzar and his campaign against the Israelites from the Old Testament.
The story is convoluted by the rivalry between Nebuchadnezzar's daughter Fenena and her sister Abigaillo, who plots against Fenena to win the love of the Israelite prince Ismaele.
Nabucco was first staged at the Slovenian National Opera and Theatre of Ljubljana in 1959 and for the second time in the season of 2000-2001, on the centenary of the composer's death.
