With La Traviata (1853) Giuseppe Verdi managed to successfully create one of his most enduring works. In the drama The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, Verdi and librettist Francesco Maria Piave recognised a timeless theme, extremely attractive for setting to music in an opera. With the selection of a theme concerning a goodhearted courtier, Verdi stepped on the toes of the middle class, whose expectation of opera was a reinforcement of their false morality.
