Šempeter v Savinjski dolini lies in the heart of Slovenia. In Pre-History, the amber road from the Baltic to Italy wound through the valley, later the Roman Road Emona–Celeia–Petovio led through Šempeter. Šempeter is mainly famous for the Roman necropolis where one can view extremely well-preserved Roman excavations - the tombstones of wealthy inhabitants from Celeia; and for Pekel Cave – a real karstic pearl in the middle of the Štajerska region, carved out by the Peklenščica stream. The name originated from the superstition of the locals who saw a figure of the devil in the rocks by the entrance and imagined that the door led to hell.
