The white stork ( Ciconia cicconia ), called ''štrk'' by the locals is the symbol of Prekmurje. According to hunting laws it is a protected bird. In Pomurje there are around 100 nests by the rivers Mura, Ledava and Ščavnica. They build their nests on chimneys, electrical posts and in trees. The stork is the harbinger of a clean environment, much like the frog. From year to year storks return to the area and in March they always occupy the same old nests. At the end of August the storks fly back to South Africa. The largest location for storks in Slovenia is Velika Polana, which has carried the title of the European Village of Storks since the year 1999.
