One of Wagner's best known operas is currently being staged by the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana in collaboration with Slovenia's two most prestigious symphony orchestras.
The oeuvre of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) owes its distinctive character to the composer's unconventional personality and intense and turbulent romantic emotions.
The opera The Flying Dutchman tells a story about an unhappy commander of a ghost ship doomed to eternal wanderings and restlessness which can only be transcended if he finds the love of an infinitely faithful woman.
The composer referred to the Flying Dutchman as "a mythical creation of the Folk: a primal trait of human nature speaks out from it with heart-enthralling force."
Coproduced by the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana and the Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre in collaboration with the Slovenian Chamber Choir, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra.
