It used to be a tradition of the Ljubljanica river boatmen's guild to organize boatmen's fights. The winners of the fights, which are first mentioned in written records in 1092, were highly regarded by other members of the boatmen's guild.
Today, the rules for fighting are exactly the same as they were in the past. Boatmen fight in pairs: one of the pair sits in the boat and rows, while the other one stands on the bow of his boat and, using a long pole, tries to push his opponent in another boat off the bow and make him fall either in the river or in his boat. After two rounds the winning pairs fight in the finals. The best three pairs receive traditional prizes.
