The "European Destinations of ExcelleNce" (EDEN) project, was started by the European Commission in accordance with European tourism policy guidelines. The aim of the project is to promote sustainable tourism development models across the European Union; that is to draw attention to the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations and to promote destinations where economic growth is pursued in such a way as to ensure social, cultural and environmental sustainability.
The project is financed under the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) which aims to encourage the competitiveness of European enterprises.In the previous years four destinations of excellence were chosen in Slovenia: in the year 2008 The Soča Valley, in 2009 The Solčavsko region, in 2010 The Kolpa river and in 2011 Idrija.
