Stomaž (Štomaž) is a scattered settlement on the ridge below Čaven, with a beautiful view across the Vipava Valley and the Karst. On the main road Ajdovščina –Nova Gorica soon after the settlement Cesta a side road leads off towards Stomaž. The village is comprised of several smaller villages: Britih lies in an open position at the church and is very exposed to the bora wind; besides it is Dolenja vas; southeast from there is Hrib; east from there is the Ljubljanica; Griže is a little higher; and finally Črnigoji, Bratini and Batagelji (named after the last names of the original inhabitants). On the steep inclines around the village there are some fields, however, below Čaven are mainly meadows and pastures. In the past mainly potatoes and corn were produced as well as some fruit and wine. There was quite a lot of cattle breeding, however the main income especially recently has been from industry in the surrounding places, mainly Ajdovščina. The village water supply was connected from the Studenec by the inhabitants. East of the small village Dolenja is the source of the Petrčevec stream. After the confluence with the Studenec it is called the Vrnivec, which flows past Cesta to Vipava. The latter also takes in the Curlja stream, which springs west of Bratini and flows past Skrilje. However, there is something about the number of inhabitants: in 1900 in Stomaž 417 inhabitants were numbered and after the last count only 282 remained, out of that 141 women and 141 men living in 77 households all together.
