Ustje is a pleasant Primorska village with approximately 400 inhabitants. It lies in the upper Vipava Valley - at the confluence of the Vipava and the Hubelj. Its protector is St. Just. On 8/8/1942 the village was burnt down to the ground by Italian soldiers. At the old Church of St. John the Baptist (sv. Janez Krstnik) on the hill Britih stands a historically interesting encampment. In the nearby forest are important fossil finds. Here, two new fossils were discovered - the protozoa Nummulites ustjensis - named after Ustje and Nummulies vipavensis - named after Vipava Valley. If we ascend to the Church of St. John the Evangelist (Sv. Janez Evangelist), a wonderful view over the Vipava Valley spreads out in front of us. The Church stands on the top of a hill 147m above sea level. It is a plain church with a tower in which hang two bells. The interior is very simple. The walls are rough-coated. The ceiling of the presbytery is decorated with ribs leaning on eight chapters. Between the nave and the altar part there is a wonderful stone vault.
