The picture book A HAWK'S YOUTH is an anniversary edition in honour of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Olympic champion Leon Štukelj, intended for readers of all ages. The book describes key events from the early years of Leon Štukelj, spent in Novo Mesto. The selection of events and the text design was done by mr. Štukelj himself. The picture book features original illustrations by Matjaž Schmidt, BFA, and paints a veritable image of a bygone era, with real life people and a young boy with an infinite affection for sports. The book’s historical value earned it a spot in the historical Reading Badge. A Hawk’s Youth is an objective portrayal of Leon Štukelj and the story of the Hawk movement, who were both unfairly discredited in the past. The 2012 edition of the picture book features the ECoC Maribor 2012 logo and thus two distinctive and historical characteristics: the mark of 1998 when the picture book was first published to commemorate Štukelj’s 100th birthday, gives this anniversary edition special bibliophilic value while the ECoC logo commemorates the European Capital of Culture- Maribor 2012. This special edition will be on the shelves of selected bookstores and presented to pupils as an award for exceptional achievements at schools in Maribor and Novo Mesto, where Leon Štukelj spent his youth. The publishing of the commemorative edition is a small yet important and meaningful contribution to the ECoC project.
