The Pippi Longstocking Festival is the biggest festival of culture, education, and entertainment for children and the youth of Slovenia. It has been organized every year in September in Velenje for more than 20 years and consists of various interesting events for children and young people. It includes puppet shows, theatre and dance performances, music and art workshops, concerts, street theatre plays, creative workshops, sport activities, various talks and discussions, competitions, educational events, international cooperation, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges, etc. Festival venues are spread all over the town; however, the center of events is the venue at Lake Velenje. During the festival, the entire town “breathes” with Pippi Longstocking: the Pippi Longstocking exhibitions open in the center of the town; Pippi Longstocking performances take place on three stages in the town center; at Lake Velenje, there is a real Pippi Longstocking town with more than a hundred creative workshops, concerts, outdoor performances, and numerous educational events for children and young people. The Pippi Longstocking cinema is open every day where films for all pirates and Pippi Longstockings are screened. The entire year of 2012 will be marked by the Pippi Longstocking festival. There will be a festival of children’s international dance creativity “Pippi Longstocking Moves,” numerous events, competitions, and exhibitions. In addition to the Pippi Longstocking Week, the Velenje Festival is also preparing a series of year round Pippi Longstocking activities, including performances of Velenje Festival’s own production (puppets, dance, music), co production activities (publishing, art, intermedia projects), and monthly events for children with the same theme. A series of interesting cultural and educational programs are in progress: the Pippi Longstocking summer weekends, the Pippi Longstocking academy, the Pippi Longstocking reading badge, an international conference on the integration of dance into educational institutions, Slovenian competitions, a puppet theatre school for children, theatre improvisations, and numerous guests from abroad.
