Gay and lesbian Slovenia

Slovenia is becoming progressively more accepting of people who openly display their homosexual tendencies. Gay-friendly cafés and clubs can be found in most larger towns. It is still rare to see a gay or lesbian couple walking hand-in-hand on the street. Couples who do this will attract a certain amount of attention.

Attacks on members of the LGBT community are rare, although a number of isolated incidents in recent years mean that a certain discretion is recommended in expressing a homosexual orientation.
Among the biggest and most distinctive events organised by the very active LGBT community in Slovenia is the annual Pride Parade, which takes place in Ljubljana in June. It includes a procession and other events designed to raise awareness about the LGBT community. The Festival of Gay and Lesbian Film has been a regular fixture in December for a number of years.

Gay-friendly venues

The largest LGBT community in Slovenia is in Ljubljana, where there are several gay-friendly clubs and cafés. These include:

- Q Cultural Centre – two night clubs in the Metelkova Autonomous Cultural Zone.
- Roza Klub K4 – Saturday event at the K4 club in the city centre.
- Open – café hosting musical and literary evenings.

Ljubljana also has two saunas and a number of other public areas that are popular meeting places for gay men and lesbians. Gay-friendly B&B- type accommodation is available in Ljubljana.

The LGBT community also has its own café in Maribor, where there are also two saunas catering for gays and lesbians.

In summer the coastal town of Piran and the beach between Piran and Strunjan can be considered gay-friendly.

Active gay and lesbian organisations

There are several very active gay and lesbian organisations in Slovenia, among them Roza Klub, Legebitra, Out in Slovenia and DIH. Representatives of all these organisations can provide more details and useful information for gay and lesbian travellers in Slovenia. <
