Streetwalker, guided tour

Starting point: The old vine

The Streetwalker, a »ready-made« outdoor gallery, represents a new artistic practice in public area that uses the existing “bits and pieces of the town” – artefacts, landscapes, urban compositions and installations – and, by attributing concepts, transforms them into works of art or art objects. Flower pots, furrowed façades, traffic signs, etc., will be equipped with gallery plates that include a fictional author, the date of creation, the technique and the concept of the exposed “artwork”. The aim of the gallery is to start a more open dialogue on modern art practices that would be interesting for a wider public, to highlight different possibilities for the use of public area and to draw attention to interesting details of the town landscape that would otherwise be overlooked.
In order to help us discover and present these “artistic artefacts”, we invite Maribor’s visual artists, performers, art history students and all who would like to participate in the creation of the urban outdoor gallery.
The project will be carried out by members of the LJUD group and the participants of the workshops. It includes:
preparatory workshops that will take place in Maribor on 14 and 16 June (each will last about five hours),
a rehearsal in the centre of Maribor on 30 July,
the realisation in the centre of Maribor on 31 July and 1 August.
The workshops will include familiarising the participants with the project and the LJUD group, looking for artefacts at the chosen location and placing gallery plates with names and concepts on the artefacts.
The realisation of the project involves a guided tour around the gallery where the selected artefacts will be presented to the audience. On the guided tour, minor roles will be given to the workshop participants as well.
The project is a part of the Maribor 2012 ECC programme and is conducted in the context of the Town Keys program series.
