Slovenj Gradec boasts an extraordinary collection of objects and art works representing Africa when it was liberating itself from colonial influences and seeking recognition in the world. It was given to the town in 1977 by a local called Franc Tretjak who spent 18 years in Africa where he worked as a UN financial adviser. During this time, Yugoslavia was one of the leading members of the Non-Aligned Movement and cooperated with several African governments. Franc Tretjak was also declared an honorary citizen by the Municipality of Slovenj Gradec for his outstanding contributions to the economic development of African countries.

In 2012, the exhibited objects in the Youth Culture Center will be joined by new didactic materials introducing the collection comprised almost entirely of gifts from African locals. The collection has almost 300 works and the most interesting ones include Dankalia knives and a lantern made of recycled materials. The collection also includes 1500 diapositives, movies and magnetic tape, postcards, maps, and literature on Africa.

Opening Hours: Tuesday-Friday: 9.00-18.00; Saturday-Sunday: 10.00-13.00 in 14.00-17.00
