Arrival to Slovenj Gradec
Walk through the old city’s centre and visit of the cultural and historic monuments.
Medieval Slovenj Gradec, with its trade rights before 1251 and city rights before 1267 and with its undisturbed urban basis in the old city core, has been built in the beginning of the 13th century by the Counts of Andechs. They gave the older settlement, which has been squeezed under the city’s hill, all the attention and some strategic meaning in the middle of large family estates. We can find all the important cultural institutions of modern Slovenj Gradec in the city’s centre: Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts, Carinthian regional museum, Soklič museum and also some other important cultural and historic places worth seeing: the parish church of Saint Elizabeth, hospital church of the Holy Ghost, the birth house of Hugo Wolf. Slovenj Gradec is important Slovene cultural centre and city of arts, since 1989 it has also been the Messenger of Peace of the United Nations.
