Jančar’s cult drama "The Great Brilliant Waltz" (1985) was one of the highest points in political dramatization and theater, written when Yugoslavia had already begun to crumble. Two decades later, director Diego de Brea reintroduces it to the public with his interpretation of the drama. The new enactment will attempt to answer the question of contemporary “Freedom Sets Free“ establishments and melting pots of repression, where an organized and valid social order is born.
In what way does The Great Brilliant Waltz represent a metaphor and the reality of neo-liberal society, and how did the oppression of socialism actually differ from the violence of global neo-liberalism? The transformation of Jančar’s drama on the SNG Maribor stage is like a Kafkaesque transformation of a spectacle, presenting the European Capital of Culture an opportunity to consider the moral crisis in the modern world and at the same time enjoy a grand theatrical experience.
