This remarkable exhibition will present to the public for the first time Medieval and Renaissance literature or literature-related artwork from the treasury of the Maribor Archdiocese archives. This treasure of manuscripts, fragments, illuminated incunabula and early (some first prints) printed books was brought to Maribor by Anton Martin Slomšek 152 years ago, when he transferred the diocese from St. Andraz. So, Maribor has become one of the most prestigious sites for such literary material in Slovenia. The exhibition will cover a time of great civilizational break in Europe, when after the Gutenberg’s invention of printing in 1450 copying and painting by hand gradually died out and were replaced by the printed word and image. There will be around 40 works of art at exhibition, among which is also the oldest fragment of the Ottonian period (approximately year 1000). Visual expression of the arts will suggest that books have always been the subject of exchange and integration, as in the collection are works created in different cultural environments of Vienna, Prague, and Bavaria to the Italian legal and scientific centers. The exhibition will be accompanied by a rich catalog of professional texts.
Opening Hours: Monday-Friday: 10:00-16:00; Saturday: 9:00-12:00
