Throughout its history, Lent in Maribor has been especially important thanks to timber rafting on the Drava River. This was the port for “šajka rafts”, wooden boats called “rancas”, there were mills and an inn called “Benetke” (Venice). Until hydroelectric power plants were built, the Drava River was for raftsmen a transport route to Osijek, Belgrade and even further. Rafts were mainly built in the Drava valley. The Maribor Tourist Association has been preserving timber rafting as cultural heritage for over a quarter of a century. Their efforts have always been targeted at timber rafting heritage to get its well-deserved place in Maribor where all the material would be gathered and exhibited on view for visitors. The International Rafting Exhibition, which will take place in September on 8 Koroška Street in Maribor, will feature rafting or transport on the Drava River not only in the Drava valley but also in the neighbouring Austrian towns along the Drava River. It will also show documents concerning river transport on the Drava River in Croatia and Hungary, all the way to the place where it flows into the Danube River. An old tradition, such as rafter’s christening, will be presented in September in a special way since numerous raftsmen from the neighbouring Austria will come to visit “flosars” from Maribor. This year, the town of Maribor will present itself to the International Timber-Raftsmen Association and gain the status of a “Timber Rafting City”. The document will be formally presented to the general public and the town itself at the exhibition opening in Maribor by the president of the International Timber-Raftsmen Association. The town’s obligation will be to continue to preserve our timber rafting heritage by encouraging activities relating to timber rafting.
The exhibition area will be open every day from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 3.00 pm to 7.00 pm.
