The only thing certain in life are death and taxes, as is only too well known to Mlakar’s everyman, a newly minted Slovene moneybag, whose spirit lives in utter bliss until a ruthless debt collector, whose claws he cannot escape, comes knocking on his door. Iztok Mlakar was inspired by Hugo Hofmannstahl, author of the play about the death of a rich man entitled Everyman, inspired by the 15th century English morality play The Sononynge of Everyman. The play was the centrepiece of the Salzburg festival a century ago. Mlakar’s modern Jožef Slehernik – Pepi is torn between here and yon: here he must juggle between the Wife, the Pauper, the Komparet, the Cop, the Putana and the Holy Trinity of Lawyer, Politician and Financier; yon await Death, God, Mother and Devil. The key difference in understanding the gist of the motive is hidden in the unravelling of events, as our hero, after suffering a tumultuous ride through modern tests, is not greeted by final salvation, but rather… By means of noble sensitivity, a sharp wit and a heartfelt understanding of human values and “values”, Iztok Mlakar created a respectful oeuvre of songs and a multiple award-winning comedy Duohtar pod mus!. The comedy, a co-production of Koper Theatre and the Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica, was directed by Vito Taufer and staged over two hundred times.
