The Glembays is the first part of the cycle about the Glembay dynasty, written by one of Croatia’s greatest writers Miroslav Krleža. The drama is set into a warm summer night, a year before the 1st World War, when the economic and social success of the dynasty was at its peak. Despite the lavish and cosmopolitan lifestyle of the Glembays a solitary event reveals an astonishing history of extortions, cover-ups, violence, tragedy and death which seem to follow the family from the beginning of their rise through the social ranks and may fatally mark the future of the dynasty. The drama reaches a bloody climax, with the tempo and ferocity worthy of classical ancient Greek tragedies. Despite its classical elements the protagonists do not follow the linear development characteristic for classical tragedies, but rather develop and showcase modern personal traits. With immense sharpness, theatrical power and a sensible, yet critical tone, The Glembays show what happens to tycoons when they meet their destiny.
