Several “controversial” historical dates dominate commemorations of World War II events in Latvia. The remembrance dates in question are regarded in a different manner by Latvians, Russians and the Jews. Through the stories of three main characters, the film attempts to determine the vast differences between these memories and why a particular date, celebrated and held in high esteem by one group, carries an air of injustice and deeply-rooted pain for another group. The film follows three protagonists: a Latvian, who witnessed and experienced the atrocities of the Soviet regime; a Jew, who survived the Nazi-instigated Holocaust living among Latvians; and a man of Russian origin, who first came to Latvia as a German prisoner of war and stayed when the Soviets occupied the country again in 1945. Three different historical interpretations, three different memories – a long-lasting legacy of a repressive and violent foreign rule.
