Oskar Kokoschka is one of the most prominent representatives of the Austrian Expressionism. A painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and a writer, he lived from 1886 to 1980. In his hometown of Pöchlarn on the Danube, he established the Kokoscha House together with his wife Olda. The artist’s lesser known graphics, watercolor paintings, and photographs can be found in the house. Most of his works reveal the great expressionist artist as a realist portraitist, and an accurate painter of animals and flowers. A lesser known fact about Kokoschka is that his childhood friend lived near Ptuj – the painter and sculpture Else Oeltjen Kaimis, who was born in 1887 and died in 1944. At the break of the century, she studied in Graz and Vienna. Her artistic achievements remained in the shadow of her husband’s, the painter Jan Oeltjen. She did, however, leave behind artwork and journal entries about her exciting life and the time she spent with Kokoschka and other expressionist artists at a time when only a few women were working their way to being considered artists.
