Spodnja Idrija, with its 1800 inhabitants, is the second largest settlement in the Idrijan municipality. Spodnja Idrija is actually much older than the neighbouring and larger Idrija, the settlement boasts a rich cultural heritage and an 800-year-long documented historical past.
The oldest farms in the area may trace their roots back to the Middle Ages, according at least to some documents from the 14th century, when around 1355, a colonisation along the upper Idrijca River took place. Today is Spodnja Idrija a modern industrial zone (electro industry – Rotomatika). On the other side of the riverbank, at the same altitude as the church, the Kenda Mansion shows off its charms. It is the successor of a former, monumental farm estate, which has been reconstructed into a modern high-class catering complex. The most massively visited celebration is the Assumption Day (15. August).
