Matija Vertovec was a Vipava priest who taught his parishioners about vineyards and winegrowing. Once a year, a group hike is organized on Vertovčeva Trail to the places where he worked, but of course you can set out on this trail by yourself as well. Take the Ajdovščina exit from the Vipava - Nova Gorica expressway, continue in the direction of Planina, and turn right toward the village of Ustje. Through the village of Dolenje with its site of Eocene fossils, ascend to the peak of Nabojs and enjoy the wonderful view of the Trnovska planota plateau and the lower Vipava Valley. Two new fossils of protozoa numulit were found near the settlement of Brith. The hospitable residents of Planina will offer you tea or excellent wine. When you reach the highest point of the hike, Ostri vrh, descend to the village of Šmarje. See Sv. Lucija in the Church of Sv. Marija and return to the starting point via Vrtovče, Tevče, and Uhanj.
