The Department of Puppet Performances at the Archaeology and Ethnography Museum in Lodz, Poland, was established in 1980 under the initiative of the Polish division of the International Puppet Union POLUNIMA with the support of theatrologists and museologists from Lodz. The department collects and preserves theatre puppets, artistic decorations, projects and other archival materials (posters, invitations, photographs, correspondence and other documents). Their work also entails conducting research, organizing exhibitions and providing education in the field of puppeteering. The collection of the Department of Puppet Performances keeps the works of 200 artists and 10 000 different exhibits.
Puppets are born from inspiration for art for children, fairy tales, from fantasy and exotic worlds. Another aspect of the Puppet Theatre are puppets for adults, which make up a large part of the repertoire. Different theatre trends are often influenced by each other and produce magnificent stage images by combining history with modern theatre.
The exhibition Polish Puppet Theatre presents puppets, scenes and posters designed and created over the past half-century by different Polish theatres. The puppets were inspired by Polish and European folklore and designed by some of the greatest names of Polish puppet theatre.
