From the Ljubljana-Koper expressway, take the exit to Logatec. The unique Tomažinov mlin mill awaits you in the village of Hotederščica. The route continues on to Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park. Below an almost vertical cliff, discover Divje jezero lake, from which Slovenia’s shortest river, the Jezernica, runs into the Idrijca River. Along the Belca River, inspect the amazing “klavže” sluice dams. Continue on to Idrija (52), the oldest mining town in Slovenia. Gewerkenegg Castle houses the mercury mine exhibition and a fine collection of bobbin lace. Hint: this original Idrija handicraft makes a wonderful souvenir. In the underworld of the Antonijev rov shaft, bergmandlci trolls conjure up the fairy-tale world of the miners. The route then takes you to Cerkno (56, 57), most attractive in the Carnival period with its “laufarija,” a parade of ethnographical Carnival figures. Nearby is the Franja Partisan Hospital, one of the most moving monuments of World War II in Slovenia.
